topInterview With Z Gunz

What influenced you in becoming a musician?
Well music has been a part of my life since i can remember. My father played a major influence in my music he was a famous mariachi in Mexico, he taught me how to play the guitar and the keyboard when i was like 7yrs old so i was kinda bred into this music. Its in my blood and I guess thats why i'm so versatile because i have many genre's of music that have influenced me so i try to sound different and incorporate those different styles into my music.
How did you get your name?
My name goes back to my graffiti roots, i used to be into Graff art, when i was 13yrs old i started painting and chose the name "Zem" so everyone used to call me "Z". When i started making music i wanted to keep the "Z"cause thats who i was and how everyone knew me so i incorporated the "Z" and added the gunz as a metaphor, i spit bars like bullets with a fully loaded clip ya feel me? i like to collect pistols, i have a fetish for gunz so the name fit well!!
Who was the first Latino/Chicano artist that you heard?
Kid Frost with the "This is for the Raza"
What do you consider your music to be?
I consider my music very versatile and commercial. I can adapt to any beat and collaborate with any artist and kill it! i work very hard on my craft and re-invent myself with new styles, concepts and deliverys. I'm a strong believer in its not really what u say but how u say it. I call it (Ear Candy).
What label are you on?
My label is Smooth Hustle Records were actually a legit corporation, my position is president.
How did you get to your label?
I was brought in directly by the Ceo's Sonny Blue and Leche. they invited me in after working with them for a couple yrs. Me and them both used to do spanish rap we clicked up and released a series of mixtapes known as "Extrictamente Para La Calle" volumes 0-2 We worked hard and eventually it led to what has manifested today.
How long have you been in the game?
Ive been in the game for quite sometime since 2000. I started rapping at age 18 doing rap battles and basically just perfecting my freestyle. I have trophy's from competitions dating back to 2003, i used to go from college to college eating these mcee's up thats how i made a name for myself, but i didn't really start recording music seriously till 2006.
Who in the game would you like to work with?
I would love to work with Dr Dre, T.i, 50 Cent, Akon, Ice Cube, T Pain, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Kid Cudi, Kanye West and Any creative talented artist that takes there music as serious as i do.
If you can bring one artist back from the dead or prison to work with who would it be?
Come on man no one but the best, the legend himself "Tupac Shakur" me and Pac would do some damage! he always showed love to my people, You know "it wouldn't be L.A without Mexicans" plus he never had the chance to hear a Mexican artist spit like me.
Were do you see your self in 5 years?
In five years i see myself impacting the rap game in a new way like never seen before, I feel the ball is in the hands of a Latino artist like myself coming out the west coast to bring the trophy back home to Cali. And of course platinum placs, Shit loads of dough and just enjoying life with my family and everyone who i got love for.
Were do you see the Latin Rap game in 5 years?
I see the latin rap game like the rap game. Meaning not labeled as chicano or latin hip hop. Why cant we just be looked at like "Hip Hop"?! So i see it evolved and respected in that matter.
